Karen and Allen’s Approach to Teaching
“The coolest couple on the dance scene, these champions of contact dance are full of energy and enthusiasm both on and offstage” NOW magazine, Toronto

Teaching approximately 1,600 students each year in EXPRESS DANCE, Contact Dance and Improvisation completes a continuum effect for us. What we explore in the classroom translates directly to the process with our dancers in the studio, conversely, concepts that we investigate in a workshop are inspired by our intrigue in the studio.

When we teach EXPRESS DANCE in the schools, we find that the tighter our parameters are with the students, the more they are able to create movement material comfortably. We maintain physical direction and show examples of the desired qualities. It is our intention to bring forth an intensive experience of personal creation for each student. The students get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that they created and shared their individual movement inspired from their own bodies.

During our workshops of Contact Dance and Improvisation we investigate concepts that are relative to our artistic enquiry. It is a combined journey of physical intrigue, concepts, momentum, qualities, images, and fascination.
