Katherine Semchuk

Kaeja Projects: Moving Connections (2020), Open Circuit (2020)

Katherine is a dance artist currently based in Toronto. A graduate of Victoria School of the Arts (Edmonton, AB) and The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she is active in both the Toronto and Alberta dance communities. She has collaborated with Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC), GUETCHA GUARITCHA, Kaeja D’dance, Kylie Thompson Dance, Meghann Michalsky, Mile Zero Dance, Nostos Collectives, Sasha Ivanochko, and Naishi Wang. For the 2019/20 season, she was an RBC Emerging Artist with Peggy Baker Dance Projects. She feels liberated in participating in processes where she is able to act as a physical vessel for her own and other collaborator's stories, ideas and sketches.
Semchuk continues to develop her own creative practice and has presented her work in both Edmonton and Toronto. Her first half-length work premiered at Expanse Festival 2018 with support from GWDC’s New Work Award. As an educator, she has taught for The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, the National Ballet School, Ballet Edmonton, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, The University of Alberta, Edmonton Public School Board, and YYC Contemporary Training.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL LAND

Kaeja d’Dance would like to acknowledge that we are situated upon traditional territories. Our artists, collaborators, staff and team are grateful to be creating art on this land that has been nurtured by recorded and unrecorded human activity for by thousands of years. We honour and respect the traditional lands and waterways of the Wendat, Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the Métis Nation. We are in the 'Dish with One Spoon' territory - a treaty between these nations reflecting a commitment to share the territory and protect the land. We also recognize the enduring presence of diverse Indigenous peoples on this land.
