In Case Of Fire

(the immediacy of the moment)

In Case of Fire creates a space where diversity is celebrated and shared through a generous lens of receiving and giving through movement. It welcomes all artists and abilities bringing their exquisite individuality to the stage.

A series of one-minute solo performances becomes a trail that blazes the delivery of each performing artist’s unique practice with a touch of influence from the dancers who share the stage with them. A performance score conceived by Karen and Allen Kaeja in 2000 for fFIDA, it has been performed by hundreds of dance artists in Toronto and Japan.

The Concept

Each dance artist delivers a 1-minute improvisation, inspired by the dancer performing prior to them. This continues one after the other where the body is witnessed as the vessel to carry forward and imbue their own dance. Ultimately each dancer brings their own creative practice to the stage blended with their inspiration from the dancer before them.

  • Dancers have complete agency to bring their full selves and practice to the performance.

  • Dancers can be set up on stage or off stage before they perform.

  • Since the dancer’s perform for 1-minute each, the performance is as many minutes long as there are performers. If desired the dancers can loop the concept twice through, leading to a performance twice as long.

  • The performance can be done to music that is prearranged for the sound system or can integrate live musicians who improvise with the dancers in rehearsal and performance

  • The order of performers can be chosen in various equitable ways. Usually we pull names from hats either several weeks before or right before the performance!

  • NOTE: Setting movement is an option if desired

Rehearsals

There are two options:

1. We can rehearse over zoom for an hour

2. We can send instructions of the exact structure on email that gets sent to the dancers and then meet in a 1.5-2 hour rehearsal to go over it and practice.
